A QUALITY field is expected to assemble for Southern District’s summer feature, the $25,000 Ted Ryder Cup (1600m), at Murrumbidgee Turf Club on Tuesday.
Nominations for the Ted Ryder Cup meeting close at 11am today but early indications suggest the feature race is set to attract one of best fields in recent times.
Wagga trainers are set to hold a strong hand in the race with impressive last-start Albury winner Art Thou Ready set to be among the nominations.
Dual Wagga Gold Cup second placegetter Devised will tackle the race first-up for Tim Donnelly, while Wayne Carroll is set to consider a start for Grand Allowance.
Wagga trainer Scott Spackman has a strong hand with Prelude winner Yet Tobe Convinced and Sparkling To Win, while Brad Witt could have a contingent of horses, headed by Gunner.
The Wagga contingent is expected to go up against some handy opposition from Canberra, Albury and Wodonga.
MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook is pleased with the early indications.
“The nominations are very encouraging at this stage,” he said.
Wagga trainer Todd Smart was very happy with the win of Art Thou Ready in the Christmas Cup at Albury last Saturday.
He said all going well, Art Thou Ready will start in the Ted Ryder Cup.
“I think he will,” Smart said.
“Obviously I’ll see how he goes in the few days beforehand but he’s done well so far.”
Wodonga trainer Brian Cox and Canberra trainer Nick Olive are just two leading stables that are also expected to target the Ted Ryder Cup.
